Shutting Off the Rest of the Format with Galarian Weezing

The last few seasons of the Pokemon TCG have seen strong Ability lock cards pass through the standard format. Cards like Gabotoxin Garbodor, Power of Alchemy Alolan Muk, and even Power Plant were threats to be wary of when deckbuilding. Standard rotation has bid farewell to Garbodor and Alolan Muk while a shift away from GX based Abilities has made Power Plant obsolete. This shift in card pool has led to the meta being dominated by cards like Stellar Wish Jirachi, Dede Change Dedenne GX, and Whirlpool Suction Phione. However, Galarian Weezing, a new card from Rebel Clash, looks to take advantage of the state of the metagame with its Chemical Change Gas Ability. Galarian Weezing’s Ability states, “as long as this Pokemon is your Active Pokemon, each of your opponent’s Pokemon has no Abilities (excluding Chemical Change Gas).” What makes Galarian Weezing different from cards like the aforementioned Garbodor and Alolan Muk is that it only turns off the opponent’s Abilities in the active position. This fact makes the card much harder to build around as Garbodor and Alolan Muk could be splashed in decks as a support Pokemon that could sit on the bench. Galarian Weezing’s retreat cost of three, which makes Air Balloon unusable to retreat, and subpar attack make it so the card cannot stand as a major archetype on its own. With this knowledge in hand let’s dive into the list I have prepared along with matchup analysis for some of the early contenders for the Rebel Clash format!
